For those who don’t know, Google has released a new search algorithm, called Hummingbird, which is going to completely re-shape the way we search for things on the web. In the past, we were obsessed with finding keywords and making sure that they were placed optimally in the content. Whenever our sites were crawled by Google, we did our best to make sure that Google saw what this site was about. For example, if we were writing content for one of our clients who sells tires, we made sure that our content contained the words: tires, tire pressure, tire changes, high mileage, grip, cheap tires and more. Whichever keywords were seen on Google’s analytics research or keyword planning would influence the way we write the content.
Oddly enough, this method is still going to be used, but we are going to have to change the way we think about it. We are really going to have to wrap our minds around the idea that singular keywords are not the most important thing anymore. Sites are going to be rated through content, and Google will be using search strings that are three, four, five, six, or more words long. Google is smart in changing these search parameters. Not only will they almost completely rid search results plagued with sites that have committed keyword stuffing, but will also make sure the sites that are putting out great content are at the top of the heap. It’s truly remarkable to think about Hummingbird. Google will not longer take a sentence like “best Mexican restaurant near me” and just look at certain keywords in the sentence. It used to just see “Mexican restaurant” or “best Mexican restaurant” and then personalize the results. Now, it will be attempting to understand the search string as a whole and give results based on what it understands.
The idea behind content as the marketing strategy for companies is a great idea, because it will cause companies to strive to put out new and exciting content. I’ve been to sites at the top of search results that hadn’t been updated since 2002, and that has always really bothered me. A site that hasn’t been updated in over 15 years could still reach the top of the search results. These kinds of results should be a thing of the past now.
So, content marketing is now the aim that all companies should be striving for. It’s something that we have already adapted to and have actually been practicing for some time now. Quality over quantity has been the mentality with Comit Developers for a long time. Now, we’re finally able to put that mentality to use. So, if you don’t think you’ll be able to make the time to write new content for your site, you’d better make the time or hire someone who can, because you might notice a decrease in your site’s visitors. And when it comes to hiring someone who can help you, cough* Comit Developers *cough, you should find a company that you can trust.
